Intro
No budget too small! No deadline too soon! That is the slogan of the SASD Design Service team. SASD Design Service opened in fall 2010 as student-run, faculty-supervised, design studio. Located in the Arcade mall in Downtown Bridgeport, it provides the community a place were they can find affordable design service while also helping the graphic design students receive real world experience. The class runs once a week, but many of the students works on takes place all through the week with emailing clients and face-to-face meet-ups. That one day of class can become a never-ending cycle of working in silence on projects or buzzing with last minute finally changes. Today was no different, with client meet up almost back to back for the 5 hours of the class.
Today was a busy day—so many clients and so little time. SASD Design Service had 5 clients today, which was the most that I have even seen in a day. The first client was for the Groundswell book. Groundswelll is a book that enable UB students to let their creative works be seen by other people.
Jose—an english major at UB had come to check on the progress of the Groundswell book. The students working on it had a somewhat finalized version of what they wanted it to look like, but they had to make sure the Jose would approve of it, and luckily he liked the look of it.
After the Groundswell client had left, everyone had a few minutes to catch their breath before the next client came. Keith came to talk about designing a website for the “Neighborhood District Economic Development Corporation”. Mostly he talked about what he wanted for the website, and we asked questions on what specially he wanted. Since it was a first meet up discussing what the client wanted there wasn’t anything to show.
Keith had given us most of what he wanted for the website. All he needed from us was to make it look good. It was a surprise to try and make a website with a lot of sub-pages and sub-pages for those sub-pages.
When Keith left, Priyama came to discuss #UBSASD and the progress of the posters, and other medias the students had to show. Sangwoo showed his posters that were in the shape of social media icons made up of photos.
Last but not least was a meeting with a new client and a new neighbor, Tanner from Groundwork Bridgeport. He wanted something like a poster or something similar in order to inspire youth within the community to help the environment and to become more aware of the impact they have on it.
Tanner had sketched some ideas on what he would like to see in the project. He thought about doing something with trees—even making a tree tape with branches that kids could put leaves on. The children would write what they would plant a tree for, and they would stick it onto the tape tree.
With all the client meetings the day went by fast and all that was left was to cleanup the blackboard and putting up the new clients on the wall. The following weeks will become very busy making sure that each project is finished on time. Hopefully the students of SASD Design Service can show off work that we can be proud of to show off.
